ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AND MINUTES 2006

THE KARORI HISTORICAL SOCIETY (INC)

PRESIDENT’S ANNUAL REPORT

FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2006 FOR PRESENTATION AT THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

TO BE HELD ON TUESDAY 6 JUNE 2006

I have pleasure in presenting my report on the Society’s activities for the year ending 31 March 2006.  Speakers and topics at our quarterly meetings for the past year were:

June 2005 – John Martin, author, spoke about “The House: New Zealand House of Representatives 1854-2004”

September 2005 – John Thomson talked about “Tales from Antarctic Pasta”

December 2005 – “An exploration of the History of New Zealand Sheet Music” with David Dell

March 2006 – Ethne Wyndham Smith (Karori Community Centre), Dave Ross (Community Constable), Barbara Briant (CAB), Ann Hall (Karori Arts & Crafts), & Karl Gaskin (Karori Library) spoke about the activities of their respective organizations.

As usual we are indebted to all the speakers who give their time to come and talk to us.

COMMITTEE ACTIVITIES

ARCHIVES AND RECORDS

The move from the College of Education library back to the new library was carried out efficiently and easily, thanks to the assistance of willing helpers from the Society and also some of their family members. There seemed very few glitches in settling the collection into its new home, and the library administrators attended to the one or two which did occur, promptly.

We were very grateful to the staff at the College of Education library for their help and support whilst the collection was housed on its premises.

Our thanks go to Jan Heynes and Ruth Graham, the two committee members who have responsibility for re-organising, cataloguing and maintaining our collection of papers and photographs. Unfortunately Ruth has decided not to seek re-election this year and therefore we are seeking a replacement or replacements to assist Jan in this very valuable task. It is not an onerous job and could very easily be fitted around other activities, so please think about volunteering.

COMMITTEE  MEMBERSHIP

This year we acknowledge the contribution that Ruth Graham has made to the Society: she has been a member of the committee for seven years and during that time has worked hard in conjunction with Jan Heynes in the preservation of our archive collection. Ruth’s thoughtful input to our committee discussions will be missed. She has also contributed a number of articles to “The Stockade” and has been responsible for a chapter in the History of Karori project. Ruth will remain a member of the Society.  All the other members of the committee have indicated their willingness to serve for another year.

FINANCE

Thanks to our treasurer Frances Sutton, for continuing to manage the Society’s financial affairs so efficiently. The Society is very fortunate to have Frances carrying out this role.

MEMBERSHIP

Our current membership is 156. Elizabeth Bradford has taken responsibility for organizing the distribution of the Newsletters; and Frances Sutton and Euan Pearce assist her. We would also like to thank all those volunteers who deliver the Newsletters.

NEW LIBRARY

The official celebrations for the opening of the new library took place on Saturday 3 December when the Mayor, Kerry Prendergast, opened the building. After the speeches were concluded morning tea was served in the Community Centre. The occasion was well organized and a large number of Karori residents took the opportunity to inspect the new building. The Society’s collection is located upstairs on the east wall.

PUBLICATIONS - THE STOCKADE

We are looking for articles for the 2006 issue of our magazine. One of our aims is to foster our own researchers and writers and this is a great opportunity. If you are interested, or if you have any ideas about a topic, please contact our editor at info@karorihistory.org.nz

HISTORY OF KARORI AND ITS PEOPLE 1840-2006

Work has continued all year on the proposed book. It has turned out to be a greater challenge than at first imagined. The majority of the text has now been written and edited.  Graham Stewart, author and publisher, obtained an approximate cost for printing 1000 copies of 300 odd pages, of  $24,000. While we have a healthy bank balance we will need more cash to cover additional publishing and distribution costs, and we are currently investigating possible sources of funding. We did approach the Sutherland Trust but our request was declined. At the same time Jan Heynes has been selecting possible photographs from our archives and elsewhere but more will be required. If you have any which may be suitable, please contact Jan at 476 8714.

PUBLICITY

The Society took part in the “Not for Profit Expo” in October during the Karori Festival:  and we also organized a trip to Terawhiti, in conjunction with the Cross Country Vehicle Club, to visit the goldmine sites. James Brodie provided an informative commentary

Joanne McComish led a walk through parts of the cemetery in March 2006 as part of the City Council’s “Stepping Out” programme.

VISITS

Elizabeth Bradford organized a visit to the Wellington Museum of City and Sea on 27 October, to view the Frank Barnes exhibition of ship paintings. We were fortunate to have the curator speak to us about Frank and his work. The group also took the opportunity to look at the Telling Tales exhibition. Our visit coincided with the Friends of the Museum celebrations for James Cook’s birthday.

ST JOHNS SITE

The Society is keeping a watching brief on the future of the site and also on the plans for a hall to replace the wooden community one.

WEB SITE WWW. KARORIHISTORY.ORG.NZ

The website continues to flourish under the guidance of Phil Rogers.  The number of inquiries about the Society and Karori continues to rise which is pleasing. Our thanks to Phil for the work he does.

THANKS

This year has been devoted to researching, writing and editing the material for our forthcoming book “The History of Karori and its People” and I am very grateful to everyone who is involved with the project.

In addition, my thanks to all members of the committee who so willingly give of their time and talents in furthering the work of the Society and in supporting me as President.  Finally my special thanks to Ruth for her loyalty and and hard work during her time on the committee.
