Karori Historical Society Newsletter

December 2009

The Society’s next meeting will be held on:

Tuesday 1 December 2009

at St Ninian’s Hall, Newcombe Crescent, Karori at 7.45 p.m.

Members and friends welcome.

Our guest speaker is Dawn Sanders and the title of her talk is:

‘Hanging about the Globe’

Dawn is a well-known Karori resident who has had a long career as a dancer and later teacher and administrator at the New Zealand School of Dance. She was the founder and CEO of the Shakespeare Globe Centre in New Zealand and organises its annual University of Otago Sheilah Winn Festivals of Shakespeare in School. She was also the project manager of the Globe Theatre Hangings Project. Dawn has received a number of awards including the Queen’s Service Medal (QSM) in 1992 and the Sam Wanamaker Award in 2006.

This should be a great finale for 2009 and we look forward to seeing a good turn-out of members, neighbours and friends to hear Dawn and to share some Christmas goodies, wine and fruit juice.

September 2009 meeting

Those who attended the meeting enjoyed Redmer Yska’s talk about various aspects of early Wellington including the zoo, and the rivalry between John Plimmer and Thomas Wilmor McKenzie. It was interesting to note Thomas McKenzie’s connection with Karori: his eldest daughter Maggie had married James MacKenzie and he and James were owners of the land which became Karori cemetery.

Committee meetingTreasurer

Members will recall that Bob Burch was co-opted as the Acting Treasurer at a recent committee meeting, but we were still seeking a more permanent solution. Hopefully we have found someone who is willing to take up the position. She is Yang Yang from western China who lives in Wellington with her partner. She completed an accountancy degree from Massey University and is interested in gaining as much experience in accounting work as possible.  She came to our last committee meeting and will be at our December meeting so members will have the opportunity of meeting her.

Subscriptions

Thank you again to all of those members who have paid their subscriptions and given donations. The few members whose subscriptions are still unpaid will have a sticker attached to this newsletter. If you think you have paid please contact the president (Judith Burch 476 4400).

Report on the History Project

We hope to be able to hand over the text to our publisher at the end of November.  So we will be able to advise the meeting whether we have met our deadline.

Our website

Catherine Hodder has taken over responsibility for our website. The committee provided Catherine with some suggestions and she has been busy making some modifications and updating  information. The newly-revised website is now ready to launch. Please contact Catherine if you have any comments or suggestions by sending an email to catherineh@hodderbalog.co.nz and of course check out our website at www.karorihistory.org.nz.

Future events: Trip to view the Penguin plaque

There was a great response to the prospect of this trip.  The planned date (subject to weather) is Saturday 27 February 2010so mark that in your diaries NOW.  There will be a newsletter in February which will contain the final arrangements, but those who have already been on a  trip to Terawhiti before will recall things like  - wear stout shoes, be prepared for changeable weather, there are no corner-dairies so bring lunch, including hot and cold drinks, no toilets (but there will be convenient bushes). To avoid too many cars travelling over the hill to Makara we will probably go by vintage bus to Makara where we will catch up with our off-road vehicles. The bus will leave from Beauchamp Street.

If anyone else wants to add their name to the 30 or so we already have, it is not too late. Let the president know – phone 476 4400 or email artybees@actrix.co.nz

Compliments of the Season

As usual it has been a busy year for the Society and its members and the President and all the members of the committee wish everyone a happy and restful festive season, and good health in 2010.
