Discovering Karori History
KHS publications and other documents
Since its establishment in
1973, the Karori Historical Society has published a number of
books relating to Karori history and it also
publishes an annual journal The Stockade. Copies
of these publications are available for reference only in the Historical
Society collection, they are also available at Public Libraries and some
current titles can be purchased from the
Society.
The Karori
Historical Society has developed and maintained a substantial
collection
of materials relating to the early
history and subsequent development of Karori It is located at the
Karori
Public Library, 253 Karori Rd. The collection is for reference only and
is divided into an alphabetical subject sequence, biographical information
and photographs. The Collection Finding Aid assists users in locating
information. Materials contained in the collection includes books, newspaper
articles, journal articles, family histories, maps, ephemera and
photographs.
Journal
articles in The Stockade are indexed on a searchable database INNZ (Index
New Zealand) which is available at most public libraries and the National
Library. An unpublished bibliography relating to the history of Karori and
Makara is available in the collection of the Historical Society and another
useful source for local history resources is the publication, Wellington
Books: A Guide to Sources on the History of the Wellington Region by Hilda
McDonnell, (Wellington, Alexander Turnbull Library, 1992).
