The original Makara Homestead and Shearing Shed  circa 1900
These old buildings are now gone. Reportedly some students occupied the house one weekend and it burnt down.
It is believed that the Wheeler family originally built the homestead.

Makara - Ohariu Bay - 1905

Ohariu Bay - A century later these cottages and baches are long gone from the coastline at Makara.
This is known locally as Fisherman's Bay (ever since fishermen lived there and fished from there)

Large house at bottom right was Tisdall's, A.P. Harper's ... then from 1983 owned by J.W.McKinnon.
The house below this, in Friend Street, was Mr and Mrs Henry Cook, formerly of Makara, both buried at St Mary's.
The house is still standing but substantially altered. The house on the other side of Friend Street was Newcombe's dairy farm (since demolished). Reading Street, formerly Hamilton Street, runs from right to left into Main Road.
The house on the corner of Reading and Friend Street was Hamilton family (since demolished).
The house behind it was the Raines (still standing in 1985). Raine was a prominent Karori businessman.
The two-storyed Karori Bowling Club house (now demolished) is clearly visible between Campbell and Beauchamp Street (left in pic)This photo is an ATL copy of a postcard owned by Miss G Newcombe.

Speaking of St John's, it was also good to be able to report that we are working with an expert to re-use some of the stained glass from St John's in the hall and sanctuary at St Ninian's. The Parish Council believes the glass will provide a wonderful memorial to an important part of our heritage.- St Ninian's Church NewsLetter September 2007
