SEPTEMBER
2006 MEETING
Everyone who listened to
Mary McEwen talk about her father “Charles Fleming – Environmental
Patriot” were given a most interesting glimpse into family life and
the tremendous contribution the Sir Charles made in a number of
scientific fields.
CHRISTMAS PRESENTS
Don’t forget the following books would make
wonderful Christmas gifts for those interested in local history:
Terawhiti and the Goldfields by James Brodie -
$39.95
Karori Streets 1841 – 1991 By Katherine Wood
and William Chapman - $16 |
OVERDUE SUBSCRIPTIONS
Sorry, but this is another
reminder to those members whose subscriptions are outstanding: you
may miss out on your latest copy of the Society’s yearly publication
“The Stockade”.
VISIT TO CITY AND
SEA ARCHIVE COLLECTION
Twelve members travelled out to Ngauranga in late
October to visit the Wellington City and Sea Archive Collection. We
were welcomed by Laureen Sadlier, the Collection Curator who talked
about the Museum’s collection policy and some of the joys and
challenges it faces now and in the future. We then inspected the
store where a variety of maritime artefacts are kept. Ian Hunter,
one of the volunteers talked to us about some of the New Zealand
medals and naval uniforms held in the collection. |

KARORI
FESTIVAL – QUIZ NIGHTS
You will recall that the Society’s
contribution to the 2006 Festival was to provide questions for two
Quiz evenings. With the help of committee members, friends and
family we managed the required 80 questions. We ended up with a much
greater admiration for those people who sit all day thinking up quiz
questions. Imagine our frustration, disappointment, etc. that NO
ONE, BUT NO ONE TURNED UP EITHER NIGHT. WHY DOES NO ONE LOVE US.
However, rest assured the questions will not be wasted.
HERITAGE DAY AT THE KARORI SANCTUARY –
Saturday 2 December
We have enclosed a pamphlet which gives details
about the programmed planned for Saturday 2 December 2006 at the
Sanctuary. Why not go along and have a look at some of the
activities.
PROGRESS REPORT ON – THE HISTORY KARORI
PROJECT
At the last committee meeting on 2 November the
President reported that Jim Brodie has suffered major health
problems and consequently has withdrawn from active involvement in
the project. His withdrawal is a considerable loss to the project,
not only from a personal point of view, but because we have lost his
experience and expertise in writing and editing and his intimate and
wide-ranging knowledge of the history of Karori. On a more practical
level we are likely to have to pay more in editing costs.
Despite this setback the
project will of course continue. The committee also set the
following deadlines:
·
the text to be completed and edited
by 31 December 2006 with publication
during 2007.
The costs of publication
will be considerable so we will be applying to a number of funding
organisations for finance – including local businesses and service
groups. If you can help with this please advise.
WEBSITE
This is proving to be a
great asset to the Society in terms of letting people know what the
Society does and some of the resources it has. Frances Sutton keeps
excellent statistics of the number of visitors to the site and what
the “popular” pages are. Visitor growth has been 30% each year with
the Home Page attracting the highest number followed by Grave
cleaning and then Karori Streets. Each month a different page on
the site is highlighted to encourage exploration into the “depths”
of the site and it is interesting to see an increase to that area
when it is mentioned on the Home Page. We also get e-mail feedback
offering additional information on the photographs which has been
useful to fill in gaps. Phil Rogers does a great job in keeping it
up-to-date. So if you haven’t logged in try it at –

David Sercombe, a
member of the Karori Golf Club, will talk about “One Hundred years of
Golf in Karori”. The club has
recently celebrated its centennial so come along and hear about its
beginnings and history.
We look forward to
a good attendance of members and friends at our AGM. We would
particularly welcome new members who may be prepared to join our
committee. The work is interesting and with only four public and four
committee meetings a year, it is not too time consuming nor onerous. So,
be brave and give it a go! Please let a current committee member know if
you are willing for your name to be put forward.

ARTICLES for “THE STOCKADE”
Our editor is keen
to encourage members to contribute articles for the next issue. These

NAME TAGS
Happily we have a
lot of new members coming along to our meetings and the committee agreed
that name tags would make for a more friendly atmosphere. We plan to
make our own, but in the meantime if you have a spare label please wear
it at the next meeting – our AGM.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS
Ruth Graham, who
has been a valuable and hard-working member of the committee for the
last seven years has decided not to seek re-election. She has played a
very active role in re-organising, cataloguing, and maintaining our
archive collection, and her skills will be sadly missed.

MARCH
MEETING
Over forty members attended the meeting and enjoyed listening to
the range of speakers representing the Police, Karori library, CAB, Karori Arts
& Crafts and the Community Centre. Many people commented later that they had
learnt a great deal about the past and current activities of these
organizations.

2006 MEETING –
This will be a chance to come and hear something about the history of
the Heart of Karori site and in particular the early days of the
Community Centre together with those currently “in charge” talk about
their own organisations - their activities and what they have to offer.
An opportunity for you to discover something about a few of the
voluntary organisations which exist in the community.
COME ALONG AND HEAR
ETHNE WYNDHAM SMITH,
Community Centre Coordinator, ANN HALL President of the Karori Arts &
Crafts Centre, BARBARA BRIANT, CAB Co-ordinator and DAVE ROSS, Local
Police Constable.
DECEMBER 2005 MEETING
For
those who were slightly hesitant about the possibility of having to sing
at our Christmas function – heaven forbid - we have to tell you that
you missed a treat. David Dell is not only a great musician and
communicator but also one of those people who is able to impart lots of
interesting historical facts about New Zealand music and musicians with
a great deal of laughter.

but this is another reminder to the few members who subscriptions are
still outstanding. It could be that you will miss out on your copy of
“The Stockade”.

KARORI LIBRARY
Have
you checked out our new library? The official opening on 3rd
December 2005 was a great celebration and the Society’s archival
collection was recognised as being of importance to Karori people. It is
located on the top floor in a light and airy situation with chairs and
tables nearby to work at. Don’t forget to record your name in the
logbook at the Reference Desk on the top floor.
PHOTOGRAPHS FOR OUR HISTORY BOOK – Do you have any we could use?
We are
making good progress with the writing and editing – but we also need
photographs. They don’t necessarily have to be very old - we need ones
which illustrate what life was like in Karori in various eras; we need
scenes and views – sports events, local personalities, shops, arts and
crafts activities. In fact photos of any aspect of the life and time of
Karori from 1840 – 2006 would be welcome. They do need to be of good
clear quality which would be suitable for reproduction, or for copying
for our files.
STOCKADE
The
2005 issue is enclosed – we hope you enjoy it.

delivering the Newsletter or serving refreshments.

the Antarctic, with particular reference to Harry McNeish and Thomas Ord
Lees, two members of the team who are now buried in the Karori cemetery.
Visit to Wellington

ships with a commentary by the curator – together with large pieces of
chocolate cake in honour of James Cook’s birthday.

Cable Car Museum
The extensions to the Cable Car Museum, located at the summit of the
existing system, are scheduled to re-open on Monday 5 December.
The extension will provide more room to display exhibits including the
restored Grip Car number 3. This car was the spare car and used to
alternate with the main cars when they were being serviced. Built in
Wellington circa 1907, it was slightly different from the other two cars
with fewer outside seats and more inside the cabins.
The car was withdrawn in 1978 when the old system was de-commissioned,
and placed in covered storage at the Karori Stagecoach depot in Darwin
street. In 2004 it was removed to the Wairarapa where it underwent
extensive restoration before returning to Wellington. It has been
totally restored to its original condition and looks resplendent in its
Edwardian design.
Opening hours are 10am to 5pm daily, seven days per week. Entry is free
and a visit is a must for all those interested in the history of
Wellington.
