The Society’s Next Meeting
will be held on Tuesday 6 September 2011 at St Ninian’s Hall,
Newcombe Crescent, Karori at 7.45 pm Members and friends
welcome Our Speaker, Jenny Jones
who describes herself as a feral historian will talk about her book “No Simple Passage” the story of her
great grand-parents’ journey to New Zealand on the London in 1842. KARORI AND ITS PEOPLE - the launch We have lived through some exciting times recently –
starting with the launch of our book on Sunday 12 June. What a great afternoon
- held in the very gracious venue of Marsden School with a supportive and
enthusiastic audience of well wishers from Karori and beyond and, the icing on
the cake, the sale of a considerable number of books. Karori-born and former mayor of Wellington Fran Wilde
pitched her launch speech at the right level to inspire her audience - she was
enthusiastic and very appreciative of the quality of the publication and
identified with the stories of the suburb. She also emphasised the value and
importance of community as a contributing factor to the development of Karori. We have already thanked Martine Foster, a staff member at Marsden, for the assistance she gave the Society prior to the launch and also on the day. Members of the committee helped in so many different ways on the day to make the afternoon such a success. Thank you all very much. The books have been selling like the proverbial ‘hot
cakes’. It has also been very gratifying for the co-editors, the writers and
the publishers to have received so many compliments about the book – its
comprehensiveness, its general interest, and so on. It was a huge undertaking for us all but now
we can relax in the knowledge the hard work has paid off. It was a job well
done. Members who have not yet bought a book are urged not to delay. Stockade Our editor, Jo Elworthy is working on the text for the
forthcoming issue but she needs more material from members. Those who maybe
have a draft or two in the bottom drawer please get in touch with Jo and those
who have not yet ventured into print now is the time to ‘give it a go’. Contact Jo by e-mail at joelworthy@paradise.net.nz The treasurer reports there are a number of unpaid
subscriptions: individual $15 or family $20. You have been sent a Reminder
Invoice if our records say your subscription is unpaid. The bank account number
for those wishing to use Internet Banking should now be correct. We are pleased to report that we have
received a number of donations – thanks to those donors. We have a new member of the committee – Jeni Bryant.
Jeni was away for the AGM but has since volunteered – we welcomed her at the
last committee meeting. The president also announced that she will not be
available for re-election at the 2012 AGM.
We have been invited by the British High Commissioner,
Vicki Treadell to hold our December meeting at Homewood. Vicki has also agreed to give a short talk on
her diplomatic career.
Our Speaker in June was Joseph Romanos, editor of The
Wellingtonian and Karori resident. Joseph gave an interesting, informative
and witty talk about his involvement with the publication of books about sport
and the triumphs and disasters that inevitably occur.
The president and vice-president have given talks to the Rotary Club of Karori and Huntleigh Retirement Home. The audiences were very responsive and a considerable number of books were sold. The vice-president will be talking to the Onslow Historical Society in November. |
