Awaiting the finishing of the road the tunnel is nearly completed. Trams and cars will utilise the new facility and residents will no longer have to journey over the hill to Aro Valley or through Northland to reach the central city.

Opened in 1900 a century later the Karori tunnel is the main access route utilised into the suburb from the city.
Trolley buses share the narrow tunnel with all other vehicles and pedestrians.
