June Meeting

The AGM of the Society was very well attended, and all members very much enjoyed the Family History / Whakapapa presentation by five year nine pupils from Marsden School.

Officers Elected:  President:              Judith Burch                                             Secretary:               Henry Brittain
Treasurer:               Frances Sutton                                        Honorary Auditor: James Graham                                                          Committee: Jim Brodie, Ruth Graham, Jan Heynes, Jenny Mawson, Arthur Olsson, Euan Pearce, Phil Rogers.

Daphne Sutton, who has retired from the committee, was thanked for all the work she has done for the Karori Historical Society in her role as secretary.

Help Needed

We are still looking for someone who may like to act as Assistant Editor for THE STOCKADE; and anyone who is interested in joining the Committee or helping in any way, is invited to talk to a committee member.

Karori History Project

First drafts for the book are currently being written, and another meeting of the history group will be held in September.  It is exciting to see the progress being made and we will hope to keep up the momentum !

Wellington City Council Heart of Karori Project

Many members will have noted the demolition of the old Karori Library, and the work that is being done in removing the house formerly used by the Karori Community Daycare Centre.  It will probably be up to a year before the project is completed, but it is encouraging to see some action at last.

Membership

A number of members have still not paid their subscriptions. Reminder notices are enclosed with the newsletter for these people. Your prompt response would be appreciated!

Request for Karori History Items

Judith Burch has recently written to the metropolitan newspapers, and to historical magazines with a request for any anecdotes or photographs relating to Karori.  We have had a response from several people which has been very pleasing, but feel sure there must be other items of interest held by Karori people, which we would love to see, and maybe photocopy before returning to the owners.

Photographs relating to any era that show the growth of the suburb and the activities of the people in it are of particular interest.  Jan or Ruth would be happy to have a chat about any items you may like to show us.

NEWSLETTER - MAY 2004

Our guest speakers Fiona Foster, Roseanne Carroll, Frankie Delany, Kelsey Josling and Elli Martin are Year 9 pupils at Samuel Marsden Collegiate School who will talk about their Family History / Whakapapa projects

This meeting will be a first for the Society in terms of the youthfulness of the speakers from the local community. So do come along and listen to these young people and see what we can learn from them.

The meeting will conclude with supper and an opportunity to talk with Committee members.
